Disperse

(2020-2024)

Over 300 hand-sewn seeds accumulate to make up Disperse. Each seed has a photograph printed on one side - a moment, memory, joy that encouraged a pause. The flip side includes a word cut from monochrome material - a meditation on or contradiction to the image on the reverse. As a pile of seeds, the observations and memories chronicle a personal history. Like seed dispersal, these moments can be released and translated into new stories.

Disperse is an interactive piece - feel free to gently pick them up to view both sides or even to move them around the gallery space. You can also give them a gentle shake as you might hear contents inside the capsule.

The seeds are made with either Pictorico inkjet transparency and Duralar, or mulberry paper that has been infused with wax. While the text is cut with a die cutter, the overall form is cut and sewn by hand. A majority of the seeds include die cut figures or insects pinned with entomology pins as an extra surprise. Newly added to the piece are seeds made from handmade, upcycled paper and colored thread. Embedded in the paper are the leftover plastic scraps from the cutout text of the older seeds. Also included is a wax-infused pod, splayed open for the seeds’ release.
